MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE FROM PET-CAUSED FIRES

LONDON -- Two separate incidents should serve as a caution to pet owners -- make your house "pet-proof" when it comes to fire hazards.

A cat nearly caused a serious fire in its family home when it urinated on an electrical outlet. 10-year-old Fax short-circuited a socket in the kitchen of its home in Senjahopen, Norway.

Homeowner Asle Reieertsen arrived home to find a smoke-filled kitchen and disconnected the fuse. "A few minutes later and I fear the worst could have happened," he said. The cat was uninjured.

Meanwhile, a dog turned on a hairdryer and set fire to its owner's house in West Yorkshire, England. The dryer overheated and started a blaze which caused $9,000 damage.

Gizmo -- who suffered smoke inhalation -- was resuscitated by firefighters.

The Royal SPCA in London advises that precautions be taken in homes where pets are left unattended. The Society recommends the installation of plastic caps on electrical outlets and the disconnection of small electrical appliances.
